Well before we dive in I have a quick question? I know this will sound silly but please indulge me for just a moment.

Who has every seen, used or heard of the ironing board? Well, if you didn’t know the back story let me introuduce you to Sarah Boone. Sarah was known to many as a dressmaker before becoming an inventor. She was born in 1832 in Craven County, North Carolina which was near the town of New Bern. On April 26, 1892, she obtained United States patent rights for her improvements to the ironing board.

Boone’s ironing board was designed to improve the quality of ironing sleeves and the bodies of women’s garments. The board was very narrow, curved, and made of wood. The shape and structure allowed it to fit a sleeve and it was reversible, so one could iron both sides of the sleeve.

Sarah Boone who was born Sarah Marshall married a freedman name James Boone on Novemember 25, 1847 and had eight yes eight children. They stayed in North Carolina until the outbreak of the American Civil War and moved to New Haven, CT. where James worked as a brick mason until his death in 1847.

After James death Sarah continued to live there until she died in 1904. ‘She was buried in New Haven in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery.

Well there you have it folks

Who is Sarah Boone?

I thought this story was quite interesting as this truly is a household item we all use. It was nice to dig and do a little reserach and find out that not only did a woman have a patent to improve what we already use but that she was also African American.

I hope you learned a little something with today’s blog. Drop me a line and let me know what you thought. Don’t forget to Like, Share and Comment.

Who is Joseph R. Winters?

Who is Joseph R. Winters?

In honor of Black History Month I thought I would share with you some of the amazing people who have invented some of the very things we use today. I believe that learning never stops so let’s take a walk down not just Black History but History lane itself.

Who is Joseph R. Winters?

Who is Joseph Winters?

Joseph Richard Winters was an African-American abolitionist and inventor born August 29, 1824 in Leesburg, Virginia to an African-American brickmaker and a Shawnee Indian mother, (names unknown) who was the daughter of a noted herbalist and medical practitioner called the “Indian doctor woman.”
On May 7, 1878 Joseph received U.S. Patent number 203,517 for a wagon-mounted fire escape ladder. On April 8, 1879, he then received U.S. Patent number 214,224 for an “improvement” on the ladder. And then on May 16, 1882,
he received U.S. Patent number 258,186 for a fire escape ladder that could be affixed to buildings.

It has often erroneously been cited that Winters was the original inventor of the wagon mounted fire escape however his version was patented 29 years after George Huttman and George Kornelio initially introduced the idea in 1849.

It’s amazed me as I studied Mr. Winters that his ladder replaced the wooden ladder with a metal frame and parallel steps and this great innovation was utilized by the Chambersburg, Pennsylvania fire department who mounted the ladder on a horse-drawn wagon.

Around 1840 Joseph’s family relocated to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania where he worked as a farmer, and later
as a mechanic for the Cumberland Valley Railroad. He was also a noted fisherman and hunter.

Mr. Winters was a man of many talents. Both Black and white residents long remembered him for his great nature knowledge and skills, as well as fishing and fly making and if that wasn’t enough he was also a poet and lyricist,
who composed a song supporting the 1900 presidential campaign of William Jennings Bryan. He also composed another song entitled “Ten Days after the Battle of Gettysburg and again if that wasn’t enough he also wrote an autobiography with the same title, but no copies seem to have survived.

Mr. Winters was also active in the Underground Railroad and it has been said that it was Joseph who arranged the famous meeting between Frederick Douglass and John Brown before the latter’s abortive attempt to take the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry in 1859.

Mr. Winters died in 1916 and is buried in Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Chambersburg.

In 2005, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission erected a historical marker honoring Joseph
at the Junior Hose & Truck Company #2 of Chambersburg at 130 North Second Street.
